Earth Instructions
Speed and Memory
  • Earth is similar to use as NASA World Wind or Google Earth.

  • Move the Earth by clicking on a point on the Earth and then move the mouse.

  • Zoom the Earth using one of the following methods:

    • rotating the mouse wheel (center wheel)

    • holding down the mouse center button/wheel and moving the mouse up or down

    • holding down both the Alt key and left mouse button at the same time and then moving the mouse up or down

  • The time being displayed is the current Earth browser time, it can be changed by selecting File -> Edit time/date menu item.

    • This allows the Earth browser time (displayed at the top of the window) to be changed. Click on the value you want to change, then use the keyboard up/down arrow to change that value. You should notice the Sun and Earth view change corresponding to the time you set.

  • The File -> Now menu item will set the Earth browser time to the current time.

    • This is useful if you have manually changed the Earth browser time and want to go back to the current time.

  • The timezone selection lists allow the Earth browser timezone to be changed to any timezone on Earth. It defaults to the current timezone reported by your computer (i.e. your timezone).

    • Changing the timezone does not change the time (i.e. UTC time will remain the same). But the time you see will be different because it is local time within the selected timezone.

    • Note: this does not change the view of the Earth since the actual time is not changed.

    • The Home timezone is the first timezone in the timezone list and will restore the timezone to the current timezone reported by your computer.

  • File -> Dark: the Earth view is night everywhere.

  • File -> Sun: the Earth view is night in the places that are in night and day in the places that are in day light. Mountain shadows can be seen, determined by the position of the Sun. Clouds also look 3D.

  • File -> Light: the Earth view is day everywhere. There are no mountain shadows and clouds look flat. Some more detail may be seen in this view since there are no shadows to hide detail.

  • File -> Light 3D: the Earth view is day everywhere. There are mountain shadows and clouds look 3D.

  • File -> Cloud: show or hide cloud.
